The Twisted Tale

The Twisted Tale of the Pretzel is a coffee table book that explores how the pretzel evolved from a sacred monastic bread to a modern street food icon. Through storytelling, imagery, and historical context, the book traces the cultural journey of the pretzel across centuries and continents. Designed as both a visual and tactile object, it celebrates the pretzel as a symbol of tradition, migration, and everyday joy.

  • Most food history books focus broadly on cuisine rather than a single, familiar object. The challenge was to elevate the pretzel from a common snack into a subject rich with cultural meaning and visual interest. The project also needed to balance historical depth with a playful tone that reflects the warmth and nostalgia associated with the food.

  • Simple foods often carry layered histories that people rarely consider. The pretzel’s distinctive shape and long cultural lineage provide a natural entry point for storytelling that connects faith, migration, craft, and street culture. By focusing on one recognizable form, the book could turn an everyday snack into a lens for understanding broader cultural history.

  • The design presents the pretzel as both artifact and icon through a playful yet historically grounded visual language. Photography, illustration, and textured layouts highlight the twists, loops, and cultural symbolism tied to the form. The result is a collectible book that blends history and design while inviting readers to rediscover a familiar food with fresh curiosity.
